A Silent Obligation was released in 1999 on mp3.com, with tracks at the time that were in the top 10 of various electronic genres. Red Hector became a member of Minnesota Coalition Records (MCR) which was one of the first 'virtual labels' in the internet era, which resulted in being one of the first online artists to get paid for streaming music.

The album was actually recorded in March-April of 1992, at a time when computer based electronica was in its infancy. These MIDI tracks were recorded on a primitive IBM XT computer using the very first DOS based DAW Cakewalk. Unrecognizable samples of classic pop and rock music were fused with 80's synths and samplers, to create a unique melange of styles as disparate as Pink Floyd, Philip Glass, Brian Eno and The Art Of Noise.
